Off-grid solar batteries are designed for daily deep cycling, often discharging 80 to 100 percent of their capacity every night and recharging fully the next day. Grid tied backup batteries typically only deep cycle during occasional outages and spend most of their life floating at high charge. Off-grid batteries need to be sized larger, built for more cycles, and paired with a robust charging system to handle daily wear over decades.
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) off-grid solar batteries last roughly three to five times longer than lead acid, weigh significantly less for the same usable capacity, and can be discharged much deeper without damage. Lead acid batteries have lower upfront cost but need regular watering (on flooded types), careful ventilation, and replacement every 3 to 7 years. For most modern off-grid builds, LiFePO4 is the better long term value, which is why almost every off-grid battery we stock uses that chemistry.
For a small cabin running lights, a fridge, and a few outlets, 10 to 15 kWh of storage is usually plenty. For a full time off-grid home, plan on 20 to 40 kWh.
