Solar Inverters

A solar inverter helps convert electricity from the direct current (DC) produced by your panels and stored in your batteries into the alternating current (AC) that runs your household outlets and appliances. Without one, the power coming off your roof or out of your battery bank can't run a standard fridge, microwave, or wall outlet. Inverters also manage how power flows between your panels, batteries, and the grid, which is why they're often called the brain of a home solar energy system.

A standard grid-tie inverter only works when the utility grid is up and pushes excess solar power back to the utility. A string inverter is the most common type for ground- or roof-mount arrays and handles DC-to-AC conversion in a single unit. A hybrid inverter does everything a string inverter does plus battery charging and backup power, which is what most of our customers want when they're building toward independence from the power grid. If outages or reducing reliance on grid power are the main concerns, a hybrid model is almost always the right pick.

The short answer: match your inverter's continuous power output rating to the largest load you ever expect to run at the same time, then add a comfortable buffer (usually 20 to 30 percent). A 6,000-watt inverter, for example, provides enough AC output to run a fridge, a few lights, a microwave, and a window AC together, but it won't start a deep well pump and an electric dryer at the same time. We're happy to look at your appliance list and recommend a size that matches without overspending.

Installation difficulty varies. A small off-grid inverter for a cabin or RV can be wired in by a confident DIYer in an afternoon, while a whole home hybrid system tied to your main panel almost always needs a licensed electrician for the final connection. We ship every inverter with the documentation needed for a clean install, and our support team can answer wiring questions over the phone if you get stuck.

Most reputable solar inverters carry a 5 to 10 year manufacturer warranty, and a well-installed unit kept in a cool, ventilated space will often run 12 to 15 years before needing replacement. Heat is the biggest enemy of inverter life, so location matters more than people expect and can help limit replacement costs. We only stock brands with strong real-world track records and accessible warranty support, because chasing down a no-name manufacturer for a replacement is something no customer should have to do.
